AI Calling Agent Cost per Minute in India

What an AI calling agent really costs per minute in India: telephony, speech, LLM and platform priced from vendor pages opened 31 October 2026, with a worked Rs example.

(illustrative) A CFO at a Gurugram developer asks three AI calling vendors to quote the same campaign. The first says Rs 3.50 a minute. The second says 6 cents a minute. The third says Rs 6 per connected minute. Same campaign, three units, two currencies, and no line that says what sits inside the minute. One quote may include the phone call, another may add it later, and the dollar quote moves with the exchange rate. She cannot compare them until each is split into the same layers. This post does that, using price pages opened on 31 October 2026 and one stated exchange rate.

Key takeaways

  • Plivo India lists domestic outbound calls at Rs 0.38 per minute with a 30-second pulse, and Rs 200 a month for a domestic number (Plivo, accessed 31 Oct 2026).
  • Sarvam bills speech to text at Rs 0.49 per minute (per second) and Bulbul v4 Flash text to speech at Rs 1.00 per 1,000 characters on pay as you go (Sarvam API pricing, accessed 31 Oct 2026).
  • Vapi charges a flat 5 cents per minute platform fee, prorated to the second, and passes speech, LLM and telephony costs through at cost (Vapi, accessed 31 Oct 2026).
  • Sarvam's voice agent rate is Rs 3.50 per minute in 60-second pulses, with its telephony at Rs 0.20 per 30-second pulse extra (Sarvam, accessed 31 Oct 2026).
  • The RBI reference rate was INR 95.2492 per USD as at 1.00pm on 30 October 2026 (source: FBIL), the rate used for every conversion here.

How much does an AI calling agent cost per minute in India?

On pages opened on 31 October 2026, published rates run from Rs 3.50 per minute at Sarvam, with its own telephony adding Rs 0.20 per 30-second pulse, to Rs 6 per connected minute at IndiaCalling.ai, which bundles telephony. Bolna lists 6 cents a minute (Rs 5.52 on its page) with telephony and a platform fee added. Priced from separate parts, the bare components come to about Rs 1.37, before any platform fee.

The spread looks like a pricing war but is mostly a units problem. Each vendor puts a different set of layers inside its number, rounds time differently and quotes in a different currency. The table below lists what each page actually says. USD figures are converted at the RBI reference rate in brackets, and GST is excluded throughout.

What is inside one minute? The Four-Layer Minute

One minute of AI calling is four bills stacked together: telephony, speech, intelligence and platform. An AI voice agent is software that holds a spoken conversation over a phone call. IndiaCalling.ai is an AI voice sales agent platform for Indian real estate developers. Behind the voice sit ASR (automatic speech recognition, also called speech to text or STT) that turns the lead's words into text, an LLM (large language model) that decides the reply, and TTS (text to speech) that speaks it.

Use the Four-Layer Minute to read any quote. Loaded Rs per connected minute = (Telephony + Speech [ASR + TTS] + Intelligence [LLM] + Platform) x pulse factor + fixed monthly costs / connected minutes. The pulse factor is the uplift from rounding time up to a billing unit. Fixed monthly costs are number rentals, plan minimums and anything else charged whether or not a call connects.

Checklist rowAsk every vendorWho bills it, in what unit, with what roundingGet the answer in writing for all four layers

Layer 1: what does the telephony leg cost?

Telephony ranged from Rs 0.38 to Rs 4.72 per minute across the pages read. Plivo lists domestic outbound at Rs 0.38 per minute with a 30-second pulse. Sarvam telephony is Rs 0.20 per 30-second pulse, which is Rs 0.40 per full minute. Twilio lists India mobile at $0.0496 per minute, which is Rs 4.72 at Rs 95.2492 per USD, about twelve times Plivo's figure.

Part of that gap is the currency and part is the product, so treat the comparison as a prompt for questions, not a verdict. Twilio's page gives no billing increment for India. Number rental adds fixed cost: Plivo charges Rs 200 a month for a domestic number and Sarvam charges Rs 59 per 30 days for a number in the 11, 79 or 80 series. When a vendor bundles telephony, as IndiaCalling.ai's pricing page does, this whole layer disappears from your invoice and moves inside the rate. For how pulses and ring time change what you pay, see what a connected minute is.

Layer 2: what do speech recognition and TTS cost?

Speech costs between Rs 0.84 and Rs 1.73 per connected minute on the two published stacks priced here. The assumption: the agent speaks about half of each connected minute, at roughly 700 characters per spoken minute, so about 350 characters of TTS per connected minute. The listener side is billed for the whole minute.

  • Sarvam: speech to text Rs 0.49 per minute, billed per second, plus Bulbul v4 Flash at Rs 1.00 per 1,000 characters. Rs 0.49 + (0.35 x Rs 1.00) = Rs 0.84.
  • Sarvam Bulbul v3 costs Rs 3.00 per 1,000 characters, which lifts TTS to Rs 1.05 and the speech layer to Rs 1.54.
  • Deepgram: Nova-3 Monolingual speech to text at $0.0077 per minute (Rs 0.73) plus Aura-2 at $0.030 per 1,000 characters (Rs 1.00 per connected minute) is Rs 1.73.

The voice you choose moves this layer more than the vendor does. Sarvam's three-times price step from Bulbul v4 Flash to v3 is a bigger swing than the gap between Sarvam and Deepgram on equivalent voices. Whether a voice sounds right to a buyer in Pune is a listening test, not a price test.

Layer 3: what does the LLM cost per minute?

The LLM ranged from Rs 0.15 to Rs 36.58 per connected minute on Retell's published per-minute estimates, so the model choice can matter more than any other line. A small model such as GPT 5 nano is listed at $0.0016 per minute (Rs 0.15). GPT 5.4 mini is $0.024 (Rs 2.29) and Claude 4.5 Haiku is $0.025 (Rs 2.38). The top listed option is $0.384 per minute (Rs 36.58).

No vendor token price page was opened today, so this post does not model tokens and uses Retell's own per-minute figures. A real estate qualifying call, with a short script and a few buyer answers, rarely needs the most expensive model, which is a design judgement to test on a pilot rather than a price fact. Retell's page also notes that its estimator shows telephony as $0.00 in one example while listing $0.015 per minute elsewhere, so check any estimator against the line items.

Layer 4: what does the platform fee pay for?

The platform fee pays for the software that runs the conversation: call flow, memory, tools, recordings and monitoring. Vapi charges 5 cents per minute (Rs 4.76), prorated to the second, and passes speech, LLM and telephony through at cost. Retell lists voice infrastructure at $0.055 (Rs 5.24). Deepgram's Voice Agent API is $0.075 (Rs 7.14). At Sarvam and IndiaCalling.ai the platform sits inside the single rate.

On the USD stack priced later, the platform fee and the telephony leg are each about a third of the minute. That is why a dollar quote that leaves out one of them looks cheap. Bolna's page says telephony and the platform fee are added per minute and gives no amounts, and its FAQ describes token-based billing that conflicts with the per-minute rates shown, so confirm its unit before budgeting.

Per-call overhead: what sits outside the minute?

Several charges sit outside the minute rate: failed and voicemail calls, test runs, add-ons, number rentals, plan minimums and the work of connecting a CRM. Treatment varies by page, so ask for it in writing.

  • Failed and unanswered calls: Sarvam does not charge calls that are not answered, busy or fail to connect, but bills voicemail. Retell does not bill failed connections and bills voicemail only for the time its agent is active.
  • Silence: Retell says billing continues during silence and hold time.
  • Tests and add-ons: a Sarvam simulated test run costs Rs 2. Retell lists Knowledge Base at $0.005 per minute (Rs 0.48) and PII removal at $0.01 (Rs 0.95).
  • Minimums and credits: Sarvam's paid plans charge the higher of the plan minimum or minutes times rate. Bolna agents stop calling when credits run out.
  • Setup and integration: none of the pages read price the work of building flows, scripts and CRM write-back, so budget for it separately.

For IndiaCalling.ai, the only claims made here are those on its pricing page: Rs 6 per connected minute, zero monthly fee, zero seat licences, telephony, STT and LLM bundled, no lock-in on Pay as you go, and custom Enterprise pricing.

Worked example: three ways to buy 1,925 connected minutes

Take 1,000 leads dialled, a 55% connect rate and a 3.5 minute average call. That gives 550 connected calls and 1,925 connected minutes. Price them three ways: assemble the parts yourself, buy a USD platform and add the parts, or buy a managed INR rate.

B. USD platform plus partsVapi Rs 4.76 + Twilio mobile Rs 4.72 + Deepgram Nova-3 Rs 0.73 + Aura-2 Rs 1.00 + GPT 5.4 mini Rs 2.29Rs 13.51Rs 26,000Number rental, exchange-rate movement, build

C2. Managed INR: IndiaCalling.aiRs 6 per connected minute, telephony includedRs 6.00Rs 11,550GST treatment, any Enterprise terms
Representative figures based on typical real estate presales operations. Methodology: 1,000 dialled x 55% connect x 3.5 minutes = 1,925 connected minutes; every rate comes from a vendor page opened on 31 October 2026; USD converted at INR 95.2492 (RBI reference rate, FBIL, 30 October 2026); GST excluded; LLM cost in A and B uses Retell's published per-minute estimates. If every call lasted exactly 3.5 minutes, Sarvam's 60-second pulse would bill 4 minutes per call, lifting C1 to Rs 8,470.

Route A is the floor, not a quote, since it excludes the platform you would have to build or buy. Route B shows how a dollar platform fee plus pass-through parts can end up above a managed rate. Route C1 is cheaper than C2 on the rate card, by Rs 4,042.50 on this month. The pages do not show whether the products match on real estate scripts, CRM write-back or site visit booking, so a price table alone should not choose between them. What the table does show is that Rs 6 bundles telephony and the rate you compare against should too.

How do I convert a USD quote to rupees fairly?

Convert every USD line at one stated rate on one stated date. This post uses the RBI reference rate of INR 95.2492 per USD, which the RBI page dated as at 1.00pm on 30 October 2026 and attributed to FBIL. Multiply the USD price by that rate, then compare against INR quotes that exclude GST.

Two traps follow. First, vendors convert on their own schedule: Bolna's page shows 6.00 cents as Rs 5.52, which implies about Rs 92 per USD, while the RBI rate gives Rs 5.71. Second, a USD quote exposes you to exchange-rate movement over a campaign, and the card or bank charges that apply to foreign-currency payments are not priced here. Ask your finance team how foreign vendors are invoiced and taxed.

When this does not work

  • Under about 500 connected minutes a month: fixed costs such as number rentals and plan minimums dominate the per-minute maths. At that scale a plan minimum like Sarvam's Rs 9,999 only pays off above roughly 3,000 minutes at Rs 3.25.
  • Inbound-heavy calling: this model prices outbound minutes. Inbound pricing, concurrency and missed-call handling differ.
  • You already run a development team: Route A may beat any bundle if you can maintain the stack, and it then depends on engineer time, not on rate cards.
  • Tamil, Telugu and other languages where ASR accuracy decides outcomes: a cheaper recogniser that mishears budgets is dearer in lost leads. Test on recorded calls.
  • Enterprise minimums: published rates change once a vendor quotes committed volume, and several vendors publish no Enterprise figure.

Before you rely on any of these figures, re-open the vendor pages. Rates change, and this post records what the pages said on 31 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rs 6 per minute expensive for AI calling in India?

It sits at the upper end of the published rates read on 31 October 2026, against Rs 3.50 at Sarvam and 6 cents at Bolna, but the units differ. IndiaCalling.ai's Rs 6 is per connected minute with telephony, STT and LLM bundled. Compare on the same layers: Sarvam with its own telephony is Rs 3.90. Judge by cost per site visit, not per minute.

What is the cheapest way to run an AI calling agent?

Assembling parts is cheapest on paper. Plivo telephony, Sarvam speech and a small LLM priced at about Rs 1.37 per connected minute on pages read on 31 October 2026. That excludes the platform, building the call flow, monitoring and CRM work. It suits teams with engineers and volume. Others usually pay for a managed rate.

Why do USD quotes look cheaper than INR quotes?

A dollar figure is often one layer. Vapi's 5 cents (Rs 4.76) is a platform fee only, with speech, LLM and telephony passed through at cost. Retell's headline starts at $0.07 and itemises LLM, voice and telephony. Add the missing layers and convert at one stated rate. In the worked example the USD stack came to Rs 13.51 per minute.

Does the per-minute price include GST?

Not always, and the pages differ. Sarvam states its rates exclude GST. This post excludes GST from every figure. IndiaCalling.ai's pricing page was read for the rate, not tax treatment, so ask any vendor whether the quote is exclusive or inclusive of GST, and whether a USD invoice carries other taxes, before comparing.

What does telephony included change?

It removes one line from your invoice and puts it inside the rate. IndiaCalling.ai's pricing page bundles telephony, STT and LLM into Rs 6 per connected minute. Elsewhere telephony can range from Rs 0.38 per minute at Plivo to Rs 4.72 at Twilio's mobile rate. Always compare a bundled rate against a stack that includes telephony.

Does the LLM choice change the bill much?

Yes. Retell's published LLM estimates run from $0.0016 per minute (Rs 0.15) for GPT 5 nano to $0.384 (Rs 36.58) for the top listed option, with GPT 5.4 mini at Rs 2.29. On a stack costing about Rs 13 a minute, the model can be a sixth of the bill or most of it.

Are failed calls billed?

On the pages read, mostly not. Sarvam does not charge unanswered, busy or failed calls but bills voicemail. Retell does not bill failed connections and bills voicemail only while its agent is active. For IndiaCalling.ai, the pricing page says you are billed only for connected minutes while the agent speaks with leads. Confirm edge cases in writing.
